NEWTON — The Catawba County Board of Commissioners met June 1, 2026, at 7 p.m. and adjourned at 7:42 p.m., according to the county recap published June 2.
The board approved minutes from the May 18 regular meeting and special meetings May 22 and May 26.
Chair Randy Isenhower recommended Commissioner Barbara Beatty as voting delegate for the 2026 NACo Annual Conference on July 20. Vice Chair Austin Allran recommended Deanna Taylor to the Catawba Valley Community College Board of Trustees for a third term expiring June 30, 2030. Allran also recommended Public Health Board appointments: Dr. Hannah Glen and Dr. Eugene Modlin to second terms and Dr. Shirley Huffman to a first term, each expiring June 30, 2029. Beatty recommended Western Piedmont Council of Governments Aging Advisory Committee appointments: Mark Bumgarner to a third term and Tami Hefner and Lynn Sampson to first full terms, expiring June 30, 2028. Commissioner Cole Setzer recommended David Carpenter to the Agriculture Advisory Board to fill the unexpired term of Steve Killian, expiring Dec. 31, 2028. All appointments were approved.
After a public hearing, the board approved closeout of Scattered Site Housing Project Community Development Block Grant 19-C-3125. The Rural Economic Development Division funded the 2020 grant at $750,000 to rehabilitate 15 homes. The recap said the grant rehabilitated eight houses and benefited 12 low- to moderate-income residents, with CDBG funds covering 100% of expenditure. Total grant spending was $625,352.55. The remaining $124,647.45 was de-obligated ($122,003 rehabilitation and $2,644.45 administration).
On consent, the board approved:
1. The Catawba Juvenile Crime Prevention Council Fiscal Year 2026/27 Annual Plan 2. The Annual Jail Medical Plan 3. A bid award to Mediko, Inc., for inmate health care and a one-year FY26/27 contract for $2,400,167, with automatic one-year renewals at a 3% annual increase 4. A resolution confirming Billy A. Wilson as a fully qualified at-large commissioner for a five-year term on the Lake Norman Marine Commission 5. The Register of Deeds retention and disposal schedule governing that office
The recap does not list individual commissioner votes or name how many homes originally proposed were not completed beyond the eight rehabilitated.
