NEWTON — The Catawba County Library said May 20, 2026, that it is gearing up for its annual Summer Learning program with activities and challenges for children, teens, and adults.
The library described a double focus on reading and hands-on learning, with a ramp-up of programs to keep all ages engaged through the summer. It said studies show children can lose a substantial share of school-year gains if they do not keep using critical-thinking skills. The library said it takes an active role so children and teens stay engaged in summer and can pick up where they left off when the new school year begins.
The 2026 theme is Unearth a Story. The library described it as celebrating digging into a good book, uncovering hidden histories, and exploring the past, and said the theme underscores the joy of discovery that reading brings.
Programs are listed at all seven Catawba County Library locations. The mix named includes storytimes, STEAM programs, and performances and educational programs by the Green Bean Players, Critter Keeper, Catawba County Parks, square dancing with Hart Square, the 208th Army Band, and the Catawba County Museum of History.
Children, teens, and adults are encouraged to take part in reading challenges by completing at least 600 minutes of reading. Prizes are to be awarded for people who register and for those who finish 600 minutes. To keep children and teens motivated, the library also listed milestone prizes as they reach key reading benchmarks. Everyone is encouraged to register at a local library or online beginning May 26. Summer programs and activities run from June through early August.
