NEWTON — The Newton Appearance Commission recognized downtown El Batán Restaurant as the June 2026 Looking Good Award winner, the City of Newton said June 4, 2026.
The city said the award honors standout exterior design, artistic expression, and contribution to downtown’s visual character. Winners are selected by the Appearance Commission, which evaluates visual improvements and work that strengthens the city’s appearance.
Owner Marcelo Castillo said the restaurant’s design was created to reflect and share Peruvian culture. Exterior artwork draws on the Andes and Peruvian symbols, including the llama. One painted patio wall shows a child sleeping under the phrase “Antes Soñaba,” which the city translated as “I used to dream,” described as a symbol of children’s hopes. The opposite wall shows a llama against mountain-inspired colors.
Castillo said the artwork was meant not only as decoration but as an educational experience for visitors and passersby.
El Batán is listed at 100 North Main Ave. as a Peruvian restaurant using traditional cooking techniques. Nominations for the Looking Good Program may go to Sandra Waters at [email protected] or 828-695-4317.
