HICKORY — The City of Hickory wants safety improvements on Second Street NE (N.C. 127) from 12th Avenue NE to 16th Avenue NW and is pursuing a U.S. Department of Transportation Safe Streets for All grant to fund sidewalk and intersection work, the city said May 5, 2026.
The city recently adopted Hickory Moving Forward, a comprehensive transportation safety action plan. The proposed N.C. 127 N improvements were identified in that process.
Residents were invited to a public meeting Monday, May 18, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Council Chambers at the Julian G. Whitener Municipal Building, 76 North Center Street, to hear about the work, share feedback, and describe needs. The city said community comments matter to the grant application and encouraged pedestrians and motorists to take part.

The May 5 notice does not list a grant amount sought, a construction year, or how many people later attended the May 18 session.
