HICKORY — A national rehabilitation hospital operator says Hickory is one of six North Carolina markets where it has already locked down land for freestanding inpatient rehab hospitals — its first footprint in the state.
Ernest Health, based in Mesquite, Texas, announced Phase 1 of a North Carolina development program with planned hospitals in Winston-Salem, Mooresville, Gastonia, Hickory, South Asheville/Arden, and Goldsboro. The company says sites in all six markets are secured and under the control of its development partner.
That partner is Summit Healthcare Group, a Winston-Salem healthcare real estate firm founded in 2008. Ernest’s announcement says Summit has delivered more than 750,000 square feet of ground-up healthcare projects.
What Ernest says it will build
Ernest describes each hospital as a freestanding inpatient rehabilitation facility for patients recovering from strokes and other neurological conditions, brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations, and complex orthopedic problems. Care would include 24-hour nursing plus physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
The company pitches a hospitality-style layout: all-private patient suites, a therapy gym, an activities-of-daily-living suite, in-house dialysis, a dining room, an on-site pharmacy, and a therapy courtyard. Bed counts, opening timelines, and local clinical partnerships are not in the announcement. Ernest says those details will come as each project moves through planning, permitting, and regulatory review.
Quotes from the company release
CEO Jake Socha said North Carolina is a priority state and that Phase 1 is already underway with sites secured and a development partner engaged. He framed the goal as building a leading rehabilitation network in the state.
Chief Strategy and Development Officer Robin Saxon said the six markets were chosen after analysis of access gaps, referral patterns, and population need, and that Ernest did not announce the markets until it controlled the ground.
Why Hickory is on the list
The release groups Hickory with the other five Phase 1 cities as markets chosen for proximity to acute-care referral sources, major transportation corridors, and older adult populations. Ernest says it already owns and operates 45 medical rehabilitation hospitals in 14 states. The six North Carolina sites would be its entry into this state; additional NC markets are under evaluation for later phases.
