NEWTON — The Catawba County Board of Commissioners met March 2, 2026, at 7 p.m. and adjourned at 7:35 p.m., according to the county recap published March 3.
The board approved minutes from the Feb. 16 regular meeting and closed session.
Commissioner Setzer recommended Ray Abernathy for a second term and Kathy Ervin for a ninth term on the Town of Catawba Planning and Zoning Board, each through Dec. 30, 2028. Approved. Setzer also recommended Joe Good to the Maiden Planning Board to finish Bruce Ikard’s unexpired term through Dec. 31, 2026. Approved.
Western Piedmont Council of Governments Executive Director Anthony Starr presented an interbasin-transfer update. The recap does not list figures from that presentation.
In a public hearing, the board approved purchase of about 0.44 acres at 2018 Conover Blvd. E in Conover (LRK 68386), subject to due diligence, for utility use at the Claremont International Rail Park.
The manager’s report listed two budget transfers: insurance proceeds moved from Special Contingency to the General Fund to replace a sheriff’s vehicle damaged in an accident, and a contingency transfer for professional services on a contingency-based contract to explore a board-directed potential real-property acquisition. Dollar amounts are not listed.
The attorney’s report asked whether the board wanted to buy Board of Education surplus on Little Mountain Road. The board declined.
