NEWTON — Residents who opened a vehicle-registration renewal and still saw a City of Newton vehicle fee on the bill are looking at a timing lag, not a reversal, the City of Newton said July 30, 2026.
The city said statewide renewal bills are prepared about 90 days before a registration expires. Because of that lead time, October is the first renewal month that will show tax-rate and fee changes approved for the new fiscal year.
If a registration renews before October, the bill will still include the previous City of Newton vehicle tax, because it was calculated before the tax was eliminated. A new license plate, or a first-time registration on or after July 1, is calculated on the new rate and will show the city vehicle tax gone. Renewals beginning in October will also show the updated rate.
The city said the timing is required by North Carolina law and applies statewide. Vehicle tax bills use the rates in effect when the bills are processed, about three months before the renewal date.
The July 30 notice does not list the old or new dollar amounts, a city contact for billing questions, or how many Newton registrations still carry the prior fee.
