HICKORY — The City of Hickory’s University City Commission hosted the Hickory Great College Teachers Workshop on Tuesday, May 12, at Appalachian State University’s Hickory campus, the city said May 20, 2026.
The city said expert faculty from Lenoir-Rhyne University, Appalachian State University in Hickory, and Catawba Valley Community College gathered on what it means to be an effective college teacher. Each participant was nominated by their institution. The event is part of the National Great Teachers Movement and emphasized teaching as a craft that benefits from reflection, collaboration, and exchange of practice.
Two participants were quoted.
“Hickory higher education is thriving! Our teachers bring impressive experience, a dedication to innovation, and a genuine passion for education,” Ariel Hamilton said. “Being in the same room with these educators confirmed something I already knew to be true. In the wake of COVID, changing attitudes toward higher education, and the explosion of AI, our teachers remain optimistic and resilient.”
Soumyakant Padhee said the workshop was energizing and cited candid talk about pedagogy, thoughtful use of AI in the classroom, and a shared responsibility to students. “These are professionals who show up not for recognition, but out of an unconditional commitment to student success and community betterment,” Padhee said.
The University City Commission’s purpose, the city said, is to foster ties between Hickory and local higher-education institutions and to help students connect through social engagement, volunteer service, and career development. Details are at www.hickorync.gov/university-city-commission.
