NEWTON — The Catawba County Board of Commissioners met May 4, 2026, at 7 p.m. and adjourned at 7:46 p.m. into closed session with no anticipated action, according to the county recap published May 5.
The board approved minutes from the April 20 regular meeting.
Chair Randy Isenhower recommended reappointment of David Isenhower to the Alcohol Beverage Control Board for a fifth term expiring April 6, 2029; Danny Long to the Planning Board to fill Gina Sigmon’s unexpired term through Dec. 31, 2029; and reappointments of Terry Corpening (second term) and Garret Hinshaw (seventh term) to the Economic Development Corporation Board, expiring June 30, 2029. All were approved.
Presentations included a proclamation for National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15 and National Police Week May 12–15; recognition of 2026 Civic Leadership Academy graduates; and a proclamation for Professional Clerks to the Boards of County Commissioners’ Week May 3–9, recognizing Clerk Dale Stiles.
Social Services asked the board to approve the Local Fatality Review Team Annual Report for state submittal. Approved.
Facility Services, through the Finance and Personnel Subcommittee, asked the board to appropriate $10.821 million in General Fund fund balance, supported by future debt proceeds, toward expansion of Catawba County Schools middle schools Arndt, Jacobs Fork, Maiden, Mill Creek, and River Bend, including a Construction Project Manager position. Approved.
Finance asked the board to appropriate debt-restricted General Fund fund balance of $27,808,553 to satisfy outstanding 2010 and 2011 Qualified School Construction Bonds due in fiscal year 2026. Approved.
Consent items, all approved:
1. Appropriate $4,046,811 in current-year revenue over-collections and unearned incentives ($1,500,000 sales tax, $2,000,000 interest on investments, $546,811 unearned incentives) for one-time capital and economic-development spending 2. Second amendment to the Verizon tower lease behind the Justice Center, extending the term 10 years 3. Drainage easement with NCDOT at 2712 S NC 127 Hwy, Hickory, for Highway 127 widening; NCDOT offered Catawba Valley Medical Center $27,525 for a temporary construction easement, a permanent drainage easement, and shrubbery removal, after CVMC trustees recommended it 4. Resolution declaring CVMC-owned 2050 Clark Way, Hickory, surplus and starting the upset-bid process on a $240,000 offer from Lutheran Home Hickory West Property, Inc. 5. Sheriff Lieutenant Eric Page, retiring June 1, 2026, requested his badge and service weapon at a later date 6. Sheriff Major Aaron Turk, retiring June 1, 2026, requested his badge and service weapon at a later date
Manager budget transfers listed $15,000 to Rescue Squad property and general liability, $10,000 contingency to Lake Norman Marine Commission (county as FY26 fiscal agent), and an insurance payout to replace a damaged vehicle. Dollar amounts for the vehicle transfer are not stated.
