HICKORY — The North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association selected Hickory City Schools Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Griffin as the recipient of the 2026 Dr. Brad Sneeden Leadership Award, the district said June 23, 2026.
NCSSA said the award honors a superintendent with a strong commitment to lifelong learning, integrity in leadership, and turning vision into action. It goes annually to a graduate of the association’s Superintendent Executive Leadership Development Program. Former Brad Sneeden Leadership Award recipients select the honoree.
The award is named for Dr. Brad Sneeden, Carteret County Schools superintendent at his death in October 2008 at age 56. The district said he established a Marine Science Academy, later renamed as a memorial, for hands-on marine science. Earlier roles listed include associate vice president for leadership development and director of the Principals’ Executive Program, deputy state superintendent, East Carolina University posts, and Craven County Schools superintendent.
“Receiving the Dr. Brad Sneeden Leadership Award is both an honor and a reminder of the responsibility we have as educational leaders to create opportunities that empower every student and educator to thrive,” Griffin said. “This recognition reflects the collective efforts of our Board of Education, dedicated staff, supportive families, and community partners who work together each day to move Hickory City Schools forward.”
Board Chair Amanda McGuire said Griffin leads with vision, integrity, and a focus on student success, and that her work on collaboration, professional growth, and turning strategic goals into results has strengthened the district.
Criteria listed include translating vision into goals and innovative programs; commitment to lifelong learning and leadership skills; and high ethical standards.
NCSSA Executive Director Jack Hoke said Griffin has served as Hickory superintendent for three years, participates in the Superintendent Executive Leadership Program, obtained Franklin Covey Education grants for administrator development, and joined the High Country STEM Network. He said she exemplifies traits that guided Sneeden’s career.
The June 23 notice does not list other finalists or a cash prize.
